Starting a New Business

There are certain things you must do to establish and operate a new business.  Below are some of the requirements you need to know, and what to do to fulfill those requirements.  

Fictitious Business Name 

A Fictitious Business Name statement is required to operate a business under a name other than your own name.  A fee is required. You will also have to publish your Fictitious Business Name Statement in a newspaper within 30 days per the rules outlined on the statement form.   Register with the Alameda County Recorder at the address below:

City Business Tax/License 

All persons or companies conducting business in the City of Fremont must pay the business license tax, whether or not they have an office located in Fremont. This tax is required prior to the commencement of a business in the city.

Building Permit 

If you are modifying or improving the structure in which your business is currently located, or in which it will be located, you must apply for a building permit.

Employer Registration

You must register with the Employment Development Department (EDD) within 10 days after paying more than $100 in wages to an employee.

Zoning

All businesses must locate in areas zoned to allow that particular business activity. Planning staff will help you determine if your business is an eligible use for that location, and inform you if any special review is necessary. This applies even if you plan to do business out of your home.
