Business
for Good Government
"The
purpose of the BGG is to help protect, preserve and further good
government, and foster a political environment which will strengthen the
private enterprise system."
ARE YOU
CONCERNED that
decisions made by our elected and appointed officials sometimes seem to
be made in a vacuum that neglects to take into consideration the impacts
on your business? Did you ever wish that in conjunction with a project’s
required EIR (environmental impact report), a different kind of EIR that
considered the financial implications and costs of delaying or denying a
project would receive equal consideration by decision makers? Do you
wish you had more time to look out for your interests, but you're just
too busy staying one step ahead of the competition? Business for Good
Government, a political action committee of the Fremont Chamber, is
one more way the Fremont Chamber works effectively for your business!
WHY WAS BGG
FORMED? Business for
Good Government (BGG) was formed by the Board of Directors of the
Fremont Chamber in 1995 to:
WHAT IS IT?
The BGG is a political action
committee authorized by the State of California and FPPC to raise funds,
endorse candidates and play an active role in support of business
interests in all state, regional, and local arenas. The BGG is
completely independent of any political party, any candidate, or any
other political organization.
WHAT CAN IT DO?
It can endorse candidates, ballot
measures, or initiatives. It can contribute money to the same. It can
also make independent expenditures on behalf of a candidate or issue;
for example, it could purchase signs supporting a proposition, not as
part of that proposition's campaign strategy, but as a completely
independent decision. It also can conduct "get out the vote"
drives, or voter registration. Local council elections, school board or
special agency elections, county supervisorial races, transit agency
elections, and state elections, for example, are all appropriate areas
in which BGG works.
The
BGG is comprised of a board of trustees. Endorsements of a candidate
or ballot measure require a 2/3 vote of the trustees. The BGG board
works independently of the Fremont Chamber board of directors.

Excerpt from an
editorial in The Argus, June 13, 1995…
“Zager appears to
have been helped citywide by support from the business community and
specifically from the Chamber of Commerce of which she was president
last year. Fremont’s business community may have gained a little
political clout in the process - and not just by adding a more friendly
voice to the council. Zager’s election should help demonstrate that an
organization with a membership of more than 1,200 businesses accounting
for more than 30,000 employees - and Fremont’s best interest as its
chief mission - can no longer be dismissed as a political force.” |
