Government Affairs Division

"The mission of the Government Affairs Division of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is to influence the development of public policy to create regional opportunities for employment, business growth and market development."

Watchdog of the Chamber

The Government Affairs Division of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce tracks issues which affect the Fremont and Tri-City business communities and maintains a continuing dialogue with legislators and key staff at all levels of government—federal, state, county, and city.

The Government Affairs Division stays in constant communication and often works in collaboration with agencies such as the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Alameda County Transportation Authority, and the Association of Bay Area Governments. We also partner with other business organizations, such as Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the Economic Development Alliance for Business, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, and the California and United States Chambers of Commerce, and our region’s neighboring chambers, in an ongoing effort to protect your interests. We communicate with Fremont business associations as well, such as the Centerville Business Association, the Irvington Business Association, the Mission San Jose Chamber of Commerce, and the Warm Springs Business Association.

By overseeing the Chamber’s educational initiatives and works closely with the local school board and educational leaders from all levels—grade school to community colleges and universities— Public Policy helps drive improvements that will result in a more skilled and employable workforce, now and in the future.

Governmental Affairs Committee

The Governmental Affairs (GA) Committee is the advocacy arm of the Public Policy Division. The GA Committee operates effectively by tracking legislative and regulatory activities at the local, state and federal levels. The GA Committee analyzes a broad spectrum of issues, with an emphasis on transportation, education, housing, and other issues affecting the business climate, and then makes recommendations to the Board. Gary Leatherman, Fremont Unified School Disctrict, is the 2004-2005 GA Committee Chair.

Business for Good Government

Business for Good Government (BGG) is an affiliated political action committee of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, authorized by the State of California and the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) to raise funds, endorse candidates, initiatives and ballot measures. BGG plays an active role in the support of business interests in all state, regional, and local arenas. Formed in 1995 to help elect candidates who are sensitive to to business issues, BGG enables the business community to have a voice in the political process. BGG has a board of trustees independent of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Although the Chamber Board communicates its positions on issues to the BGG for their consideration, BGG’s endorsements of candidates and ballot measures are made independently.
