Fremont Hosts “Beyond the Bridge” Documentary Screening and Community Discussion on Homelessness
The Fremont community came together on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Fremont Downtown Event Center for Beyond the Bridge, a documentary screening focused on homelessness and potential solutions to one of the region’s most pressing challenges.
Organized by Kathy Kimberlin and Rich Godfrey, the event brought together community members and regional leaders for an evening of film, discussion, and collaboration. Following the screening, a panel discussion featured Fremont Mayor Salwan, Newark Mayor Hannon, Union City Mayor Singh, and Hayward Mayor Salinas, who gathered to discuss homelessness, share perspectives, and explore opportunities for regional cooperation.
The event also welcomed Alameda County Supervisors Haubert (District 1) and Elisa Marquez (District 2), who contributed to the broader conversation about addressing homelessness across the county. Attendees also heard a special message from the film’s producer/director, Don Sawyer, and cinematographer, Tim Hashko.
Aneeka Choudhry, Alameda County Health Director, shared updates and insights on the health of the county's unhoused population.
The audience was invited to ask questions of the panel during the Q&A section.
With its focus on education, dialogue, and next steps, Beyond the Bridge provided an opportunity for local leaders and residents to engage in meaningful conversations about homelessness and the importance of working together toward practical, community-centered solutions.
The evening underscored the value of bringing cities, county representatives, and community members together to address complex challenges that cross city boundaries. Through continued collaboration and open dialogue, the region can work toward solutions that support individuals experiencing homelessness while strengthening communities throughout the Tri-City area and beyond.
