ACWD Clean energy ribbon cutting ceremony
On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Alameda County Water District (ACWD) celebrated a major milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Whitfield Reservoir solar field in Fremont, California, marking the completion of its Clean Energy Program.
The initiative represents a significant investment in renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and long-term operational savings for the water district, which serves Fremont, Newark, and Union City.
About the Clean Energy Program
ACWD's Clean Energy Program involves installing solar photovoltaic systems at four district-owned facilities:
- ACWD Headquarters in Fremont
- Newark Desalination Facility
- Mayhew Reservoir
- Whitfield Reservoir in Fremont
These solar installations will help power the infrastructure responsible for treating, storing, and delivering drinking water to the community.
Environmental and Financial Benefits
5,500 MWh
Estimated annual clean energy production
915 homes
Equivalent annual electricity generation
$200,000
Estimated annual savings
$6 million
Projected lifetime program savings
Figures reported in ACWD's ribbon-cutting announcement.
ACWD also estimates that the program could reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,000 tons annually, supporting its commitment to cleaner and more efficient water operations.
Project Partners
The project was made possible through collaboration with Madison Energy Infrastructure, Evergreen Innovation Group (EIG), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), and NV5.
Why This Matters to Fremont
The Clean Energy Program demonstrates how public agencies can adopt renewable energy technologies to reduce operating costs while supporting environmental sustainability. By generating solar electricity at its own facilities, ACWD is investing in more efficient infrastructure and helping build a more sustainable future for the Tri-City community.
The October 14 ribbon cutting celebrated not only an important infrastructure achievement but also the role of innovation and public-private partnerships in advancing Fremont's clean energy goals.
